Common Window Well Questions

Window Well FAQ's

We are here to answer all of your window well questions.

Will My New Wells Rust Again After You Install Them?

No! Our installed window wells are made of galvanized metal, which is steel coated with a thin layer of zinc oxide. This protective coating shields the steel from elements that typically cause oxidation, corrosion, and eventual weakening of the material. As long as the window wells are not exposed to electrolysis, they should have an indefinite lifespan.

For each installation, we utilize a specialized voltage meter system to ensure that the window wells do not come into contact with any existing metal in your home. By checking for electrolysis, we safeguard against the possibility of one of the bolts we used to connect the new well coming into contact with the rebar in your foundation. Since this is not visible, our testing is the only reliable method to prevent future rusting in the near future. If our testing indicates the presence of electrolysis, we will promptly reinstall the well at no additional cost to correct the issue.

Do I Need A Building Permit

Typically, replacing a window well with a similar sized one does not require a building permit as it does not involve altering the structural integrity of your home. However, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to consult their local city building department to confirm this requirement for their specific project. Since we haven’t contacted every city within our working area, we cannot guarantee with absolute certainty that a building permit is unnecessary.

Do I Need To Replace My Window Well?

If you observe any instances of leakage or flooding in the vicinity of your window, it could be an indication that your window well requires replacement. Several factors can contribute to this, including a clogged drain, a broken window, or problems with the lining of the window well.

The presence of visible rust, rot, or deterioration on metal or wooden window wells is a clear sign of aging. If you notice these signs on your window well, it is advisable to consider replacing it.

If you identify any issues with your window well, it is crucial to promptly replace it to prevent any unwanted damage to your basement or window. At Shape Products, we offer a diverse range of window well solutions. Feel free to contact us today to discuss your window well replacement needs.

Can I Just Paint My Window Well?

Painting your window wells will not resolve the issue of rust caused by electrolysis. Regardless of the type of paint used, including Rust-Oleum, the rust will penetrate through the paint and lead to rapid discoloration and peeling. Therefore, if your window wells are already experiencing rusting, painting them will not be an effective solution.

However, if your window wells are currently free from rusting, you have the option to paint them for aesthetic purposes or to provide an added layer of protection.
